Equinor has selected Kongsberg Maritime to deliver the Safety and Automation System for the Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel planned for the Wisting field.

The announcement was made public by Kongsberg Maritime on 6 November 2026.

Wisting ranks among Norway’s largest undeveloped oil discoveries

The Wisting field sits roughly 300 km north of the Norwegian mainland in the Barents Sea and ranks among the largest undeveloped oil discoveries on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Once on stream, the development is expected to run for around 30 years and to generate significant value creation and industrial activity in Norway.

Digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, and process control within potential execution scope

If the project moves into the execution phase, the awarded scope covers technology, services and solutions across process control, safety systems, digital infrastructure, and cybersecurity. These capabilities are intended to safeguard the integrity, performance and operational resilience of the FPSO throughout its lifecycle.

The project team's shared ambition is to set a new benchmark for offshore greenfield developments through enhanced digitalisation, operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

FEED work comes first as parties align on a sanctionable concept

The award begins with an initial phase in which Kongsberg Maritime will support front-end engineering and design (FEED) activities tied to the Safety and Automation System scope.

In this phase, the company will work closely with Equinor and other project suppliers to develop and mature solutions that support a safe, efficient, and sanctionable development concept for the FPSO.

Kongsberg Maritime's early involvement in the project has, according to the company, enabled it to contribute expertise from major offshore developments globally, supporting the delivery of a robust and competitive project concept.

The company plans to draw on decades of experience from complex offshore energy projects worldwide, leveraging digital technologies, advanced engineering tools, and new collaborative ways of working to optimise project execution and lifecycle performance.

Chief executive points to years of collaboration with Equinor

Lisa Edvardsen Haugan, President and CEO of Kongsberg Maritime, described the Wisting development as an important addition to the company's growing portfolio of advanced offshore energy projects.

"Equinor has been a valued customer and technology partner for many years, consistently challenging the industry to deliver safer, smarter, and more sustainable solutions," Haugan said.

"We are proud to contribute to Europe's energy security," she added. "By combining our expertise in automation, safety, digitalisation and cybersecurity, we look forward to helping deliver a highly efficient and future-focused FPSO that supports long-term value creation and stability."
