Türkiye Prepares to Deploy Osman Gazi FPSO to Double Black Sea Gas Output by Year End
Türkiye is preparing to dispatch its first floating natural gas production platform to the Black Sea later this year, with Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar saying the move will double output from the country's flagship Sakarya Gas Field and help reduce the country's heavy reliance on imported energy.
Platform Nears Readiness at Filyos Port
The Osman Gazi floating production platform is currently berthed at Filyos Port in Zonguldak province on the Black Sea coast, where final outfitting work is underway.
The Energy and Natural Resources Ministry announced on Tuesday that preparations are nearing completion, describing the current work as one of the final major stages before the platform begins offshore operations.
Among the most recent milestones, engineers completed the installation of the platform's flare tower, a safety component designed to safely vent and burn excess hydrocarbon gases during emergency situations while maintaining safe operating pressure. The operation required two heavy-lift cranes with lifting capacities of 3,500 tons and 800 tons, respectively.
The completed flare tower stands 96 meters high, weighs 260 tons, and occupies a base area of approximately 65 square meters. Bayraktar said on the social media platform X that the Osman Gazi is planned to be dispatched to its operating location at the end of September and commissioned in the final quarter of the year.
Sakarya Field and Current Production Levels
The Sakarya Gas Field is Türkiye's most significant domestic energy discovery in recent years.
Current production from the field stands at 9.5 million cubic meters per day, and the Osman Gazi platform is expected to double that figure once it enters service. The Sakarya field accounted for approximately 6.6 percent of Türkiye's total natural gas consumption of 53 billion cubic meters last year.
At current output levels, production from the Black Sea field is used to meet the gas needs of around 4 million households. Bayraktar said that doubling production would extend that coverage to 8 million households.
Broader Black Sea Reserves and Energy Import Pressures
The reserves Türkiye has discovered in the Black Sea since 2020 are estimated at approximately 785 billion cubic meters in total, with the Sakarya Gas Field alone accounting for around 710 billion cubic meters of that figure.
Those discoveries have taken on heightened strategic importance given the scale of Türkiye's energy import bill.
Natural gas, along with crude oil, constitutes the largest item in the country's energy import expenditure, which reached 62 billion dollars last year. Developing domestic production capacity is central to Türkiye's efforts to reduce that dependency.
Long-Term Production Ambitions Through 2028
Beyond the near-term doubling of output, Bayraktar outlined a longer-term expansion plan tied to a second floating production platform. He said Türkiye eventually plans to commission a second, higher-capacity platform by 2028, which would bring daily output from the Black Sea to 45 million cubic meters.
At that production level, Bayraktar said domestic gas production from the Black Sea would be sufficient to meet the natural gas demand of 17 million households.
The minister did not provide further details about the specifications or construction status of the second platform.
Strategic Significance of the Deployment
The deployment of the Osman Gazi represents a significant step in Türkiye's effort to operationalize the Black Sea discoveries that began in 2020. The country has moved from exploration and early-stage production into the phase of scaling up output through dedicated floating infrastructure.
The Filyos Port send-off, expected before the close of September, will mark the transition of the Osman Gazi from its outfitting phase to active offshore duty. Commissioning is scheduled to follow in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to the ministry's statement and Bayraktar's communications on social media.
