Siemens Energy has been selected by SBM Offshore to provide power generation and gas compression equipment for two floating production, storage and offloading vessels that will operate in the Sergipe-Alagoas deepwater basin off the coast of Brazil, in a contract that will generate nearly 900 jobs and see first deliveries completed by the end of 2027.

Scope of Equipment and Platform Configuration

The contract covers the supply of 16 main modular systems, known as skids, divided equally between two platforms designated P-81 and P-87. SBM Offshore, a Dutch company that manages floating oil production platforms, selected Siemens Energy to deliver the complete package for each FPSO, which includes four gas turbine generators to supply electricity, three gas turbine-driven compressor trains for gas processing and export, and one electrically driven compressor for gas injection into the reservoir.

The design has been shaped by the demanding conditions of the offshore market, where reliability and a compact footprint are described by the company as critical requirements. Together, the two platforms will have the capacity to produce up to 240,000 barrels of oil and process 22 million cubic meters of natural gas per day.

Both FPSOs will be connected to a dedicated gas export pipeline that will transfer offshore-produced gas directly to onshore facilities, enabling associated gas to reach Brazil's domestic market.

The arrangement is also intended to reduce the need for offshore flaring and reinjection.

Local Manufacturing and Job Creation

A majority of the equipment will be assembled at Siemens Energy's industrial complex in Santa Bárbara d'Oeste, a city in southeastern Brazil. The facility has been involved in offshore applications since 2012 and has delivered more than 150 skids for oil and gas projects over that period.

The use of the Brazilian facility is structured to meet the project's local content requirements, a standard condition in major Brazilian offshore contracts. Through the project, approximately 400 direct jobs and 500 indirect jobs will be created, bringing the total employment impact to around 900 positions.

The company characterized its approach as integrating engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and services into a coordinated effort that combines its local presence in Brazil with global capabilities.

Delivery Timeline and Production Start

The first solution package is scheduled to be delivered to SBM Offshore by the end of 2027, with final deliveries planned throughout 2028. Production from the two platforms is expected to begin in 2030, with gas exports from the basin set to commence in 2031.

The Sergipe-Alagoas deepwater basin, covering the areas known as SEAP I and SEAP II, is considered one of the most significant frontiers for oil and natural gas production in Brazil.

The basin's development has attracted major investment as operators look to expand Brazil's offshore production capacity beyond its established pre-salt fields.

Siemens Energy's Position in Latin American Offshore Markets

The contract with SBM Offshore for the Petrobras platforms represents an extension of Siemens Energy's activity across Latin American energy infrastructure.

The company, which employs around 106,000 people in more than 90 countries and generated revenue of USD 45.1 billion in fiscal year 2025, describes its portfolio as covering nearly the entire energy value chain, from power and heat generation to transmission and storage.

The Santa Bárbara d'Oeste facility's track record of delivering more than 150 offshore skids since 2012 positions it as the manufacturing anchor for the new Petrobras contract, giving the project a well-established production base within Brazil rather than relying on imports to satisfy local content obligations.

The gas export pipeline infrastructure tied to P-81 and P-87 is notable for its direct onshore connection, a configuration that Siemens Energy says will increase energy availability in Brazil's domestic market while limiting the environmental impact associated with gas flaring at sea.
